Social Impact Cinema

The partnership between the Skirball Cultural Center and SIMA (Social Impact Media Awards) was the first collaboration Marie introduced during her tenure at the Skirball. The documentary and speaker series showcased award-winning stories from the front lines of today's global issues. While the acclaimed films varied in subject matter – from a Ukrainian vigilante-pastor rehabilitating drug-addicted kids in Almost Holy to Afghan soldiers fighting without NATO support in Tell Spring Not to Come This Year – they represented the best in cinema to advance global awareness, explore humanitarian issues, and inspire activism.

Screenings were followed by panel discussions with key stakeholders, including representatives of international NGOs, non-profit leaders and filmmakers, to inspire activism and discuss possible paths towards social transformation.

The series included Almost Holy (Ukraine), The True Cost (USA), Omo Child: The River and the Bush (Ethiopia), Dreamcatcher (USA) and Tell Spring Not to Come This Year (Afghanistan).
